Email Quotas
There have been numerous email quota overrun problems with Pine and Eudora on
undergrad and postgrad accounts. These accounts have a quota of 2Mb each
allocated to them on the mail server. The overrun generally occurs when
attachments are received but not purged from the mail account.
We recommend that Pine users delete attachments from their accounts when
finished.
Eudora users should set their preferences to do the following:
* Leave on server for 7 days
* Delete from server when emptied from trash
This removes messages and attachments from the server once discarded on the local
machine.
Do not set your preferences to delete attachments with messages. This preference
can result in the attachment being deleted before you look at it.
Please note that there may be syntax changes between versions of Eudora.
Sending Attachments
If you send attachments, try to limit the size to less than 1 Mb, as some mail
programs, particularly QuickMail, cannot handle larger files. A 1 Mb file is half
of most accounts' storage capacity, by sending one you could overflow someone's
mailbox preventing them from using their accounts.
The preferred method of encoding attachments is by uuencode, as Macs, PCs and
the Pine program on Unix can all handle this format easily. Other methods do
exist (MIMe, BinHex) but these are not as common. Eudora offers choices for this
under the settings/attachments section. Pine uses uuencode by default.
