Hello Vic Dairy,

I have experienced great dissapointment in our dallying with Fescue. =
Around 2000 we sowed 8ha of a mix of Vulcan & Quantum Fescue into =
sprayed out then lasered old paspalum pasture. It established slowly but =
thick and grew prolifically in the warmer months, but my milking cattle =
were always cantankerous after grazing it and when made to graze it for =
consecutive days usually a few had obvious stomach pain that made them =
lie down, kick at there belly, stop milking and over a 2 yr period at =
least one death, several cows with wrecked milking seasons, and several =
suspected early abortions.Vet visits confirmed Liver damage, and from =
what I could gather similar reactions gave Fescue a bad name in the =
60's. Till I could afford to give it the Roundup etc treatment, I found =
that my non milking cattle could better tolerate grazing it.
I have had similar early stage reactions from grazing a 1.5 ha paddock =
of Winter Active Fescue( Resolute) Its now a sacrifice paddock.
But it does grow well, better than Ryegrass in heat and on salt affected =
patches,and its hard wearing.

Yours in recovery
Ben Hall =
