Hello Ron & Kath, we tried a Chicory,rape & clover mix in 2005 at an =
outpaddock on low fertility free draining soil type with tremendous =
success. It was broadcast sown and rolled with 100kg of D.A.P at sowing =
with a rain event within days to get it out of the ground. The rape was =
starting to be affected with white cabbage moth at 10-12 weeks so we =
hopped in and grazed it, with 50 odd yearling heifers.We then continued =
to graze over the summer and autumn season until we oversowed the =
paddock with Italian rye grass for winter feed and silage during this =
spring.=20
Overall we have been extremely pleased with the result of the Chico =
chicory for the purpose it was grown for. That is to provide a protein =
source of feed suitable for our future herds growth requirements without =
the reliance of supplement pellets. We grazed the crop on & off over 2-3 =
week periods with access to a silage roll in a ring, cut from the same =
property. Our intentions for 2006 is to grow a similar crop but double =
the area so that as we pull the heifers off one crop they will move on =
to the other crop and vis versa. The chicory continues to grow at this =
stage in late august. I am unsure if we will even need to add anything =
to it for this summer, more than likely not, which will suit the bank =
balance.
I hope this is of some help to you both,
Regards=20
Phil Keegan.=20

Subject: Chicory/ Perrenial Rye systems
Hello all,
How are people fitting Chicory in to grazing systems?
Over the years, we have had variable success with turnips and pasja on =
red soils at Ellinbank. Had the chance to talk with a =
Longwarry/Ripplebrook farmer recently who reported good results from =
chicory as a multi grazing fodder crop sown with perrenial rye (I =
think?).
What sorts of sowing/grazing regimes have people used successfully?
