Shane,
I have just placed some (3) new Agnotes relating to whole crop cereal
silage onto the Dept. of Primary Industries website. These should give you
something to digest for a while. They will probably need updating in the
future as we all gain more experience from making cereal silage and when
we can sort out yield vs quality issues for the various species and
cultivars.

Do a Google for the Victorian DPI Notes Information Series/Crops and
Pastures/Cereals/Forage Cereals.

Basically, as John Evens has said, cutting early while in its vegetative
stage (boot/flag leaf stage) will, be best quality and lower in yield but
needs wilting before harvest, a problem due to high yields and difficulty
to wilt at that time of year (maybe not THIS year!).
Avoid cutting in the clear liquid-early milk stage as quality will be
lowish and palatability may be an issue (sugars in the leaves are
converting to starch in the grain kernels at this stage). We suggest
cutting at the late milk, preferably soft dough stage, for optimum quality
and much higher yields. If having to mow and rake, etc. this will result
in much grain loss as will baling.
Cheers for now,
Frank Mickan

        Subject: Barley silage

Just wondering what everyones thoughts on the right time to make barley
silage are??

I have been told to wait until it goes slightly milky, but am beginning to
wonder about cutting before any grain begins to form as we seem to loose
alot of leaf at this point.

Will the feed test be that much different?
