In all the cereals apart from triticale the quality starts to drop quite
quickly after emergence, on the flip side the yield increases dramatically
as well. So your choice is to cut less fodder with good quality or more
fodder of a lower quality, this will depend on the intended use. Triticale
drops in quality after emergence but the high grain yield compensates for
this resulting in good quality at maturity, this is why trits are used for
whole crop silage.

Just wondering what everyones thoughts on the right time to make barley
silage are??
I have been told to wait until it goes slightly milky, but am beginning to
wonder about cutting before any grain begins to form as we seem to loose
alot of leaf at this point.
Will the feed test be that much different?
