We've just made the decision to downsize our land base quite considerably.
Our figures showed that one piece of land was costing us approx. $100 per
tonne dry matter just to own, let alone the cost of actually producing the
feed. By any calculations we were better off to sell that piece of land, use
the returns to reduce debt, invest, improve our remaining land, and purchase
feed if needed for whatever new herd size we decided on. I must admit in my
old age I do start to wonder about the 'growth through aquisition' route to
prosperity that seems to pervade our economic system, dairy and otherwise.
