Hi Bill

The cold requirement is a cold period rather than specific frosts. The
annuals and annual Italians don't need a cold period (vernalisation) to
flower so if you plant them in spring they will sense increasing day length
and run to head. The short rotation (biennial Italians) and perennials do
need vernalisation so wont run up if planted in spring.

Hello all,

As I understand it ryegrass has a cold requirement which needs to be met
before it will flower.

My question is, does it only require one frost or is it a low average
temperature over a number of days ?

Also is it the same for all ryegrass' or is there a difference between
annual, short rotation, and perennial ?
