I would like to extend an invitation to anyone interested in attending a
field day that is being held on King Island on the property of Gary & Helen
Strickland on Thursday, May 18.

Gary & Helen Strickland have been finalists in the Tasmanian Dairy Business
of the Year Award three times in the last 5 years – one of the most
consistently performing businesses in the Award. Their dairy farm is
located just outside of Currie. They milk 300 cows, with a split calving
pattern, on 174 hectares. Production in the 2004/05 season reached 125,518
kg milksolids which is 406 kg MS per cow (229 kg MF/cow). Pasture
utilisation was 8.3 tonnes per hectare with 18% of the farm irrigated.
Twenty-two percent of feed was brought in. Gary & Helen run an excellent
operation and have a very good understanding of their business and the key
drivers of their profitability - in the 2004/05 season, they achieved a
17.2% Return on Capital.

The field day will start at 10:30 am and conclude at 2:00 pm. After that,
there will be a tour of another local dairy and the kelp factory. There
will also be samples of the famous King Island Cheese.

A charter plane will be leaving from Tasmania (Burnie Airport) at 8:45 am
and returning at 5:45 pm on the day of the field day. Airfares cost $208
per person. For anyone interested in attending from interstate both King
Island Airlines (Moorabbin - ph. 9580 3777) and Rex (Tullamarine - 13 17
13) offer daily flights to King Island.

If you would like any more details, please contact me.

Cheers

Lesley
