Very good input Matt, your story of the son/daughter who has been talked out
of farming when growing up is sadly the norm these days.
Would the NAB shares have provided a home to live in, a living and the
possibility of gaining assets that can be offset against taxable income as
farming provides. I think it is a case of the grass is always greener on
the other side those big farmers may look as if they are doing so much
better, but are they really? Its all a matter of perception, how come there
are farmers who have built themselves up to milk over 800 cows over 20 years
or so and are still living in the little house they began in, then there are
others who milk less than 150 cows yet have built a lifestyle and home that
are the envy of many.
There are young people such as Benn whose have the enthusiasm and are
willing to work hard to take farming into the future and also older
generations such as Benn's parents who encourage and support their children
to train into agriculture knowing that it is important in this day for
future farmers to be experts and have the business skills as well as the
practical skills in order to compete in a world market.
It is very satisfying to work with these families who are being proactive in
ensuring the continuation of their business that they have worked hard to
build up and seeing how that older generation can then take life easier and
retire slowly and proudly.
Others whose own children have not wished to come back on the farm or those
who have no children have negotiated through arrangements with young people
who want to get a foot in farming. These people have chosen to take a
lesser price for their farms or a long term lease/sharefarm arrangement in
order to have the joy of seeing their farm continued by those who love what
they do and also to be able to still be involved and again retire at their
own pace. A kick back of this is these 'oldies' become foster grandparents
when their own grandchildren are often far away.
It is so much wetter in England and I know of many English farmers who would
gladly swap places with farmers over here, if you think there are too many
regulations over here try going over there and keeping up with the paper
work. It is also so wet and cold that cows have to be housed for 6 months
of the year and many winter days you have to spend the first hour of the
morning thawing the pipes so that you can start milking.
In the end it is up to the individual farmer and their partner whether they
want their farm to continue, if you know what you want and can see the
outcome you will work toward getting there and there are plenty of
professionals who can help. Those who are happy will be much more likely to
succeed as they have got what they wanted. Happy people make successful
business.
