VFF TO APPEAL MAGISTRATE'S STOCK ON ROADS DECISION: The VFF is supporting an
appeal to the Supreme Court by Malcolm and Olive Jeffery of Deans Marsh
against a Geelong Magistrate's ruling preventing them from walking their
cows along a little-used gravel road. VFF President, Peter Walsh said the
Organisation was very pleased the Supreme Court has granted leave to appeal
the decision as the case has important implications for all farmers. The
appeal is likely to be heard in the Victorian Supreme Court later this year.
The VFF is currently preparing an application to the Australian Farmers
Fighting Fund for financial assistance to pursue this case. Mr Walsh was
confident the application to the Fighting Fund would be successful because
of the implications for farmers across Victoria and in other states. For

CAMPASPE SHIRE: The VFF Policy Director together with representatives of the
UDV number 7 DC and the Echuca Branch met with the Campaspe Shire to discuss
stock on roads local law. The VFF raised a number of issues including the
requirement to lodge a bond prior to granting approval for a stock crossing.
Satisfactory agreement was reached with the Council on the great majority of

TAXATION REFORM: The president and other members of the VFF met with
Democrat Senator Lynn Allison and the Assistant Treasurer Rod Kemp to
discuss taxation reform issues. The discussions with Senator Allison
centered on the Democrats position on taxation of diesel fuels. Meetings
next week have been arranged between Senator Allison and VFF members in
Gippsland, Shepparton, Bendigo, Horsham and Mildura. This will provide
members with a excellent opportunity to discuss the Democrats position on
Tax reform. Discussions with Senator Kemp were on the implications of the
Ralph Review recommendation for business tax reform on the farm sector.
