Hi everyone,
first of all sonya, before you sell your cows and give your accountant a
heart attack, find out what value he/she has placed on them, mine values
them low $250 so that when i sell choppers for $250 i don't make any
profit so no tax....... what will happen when you sell your registered
holsteins for $1500+...
well, franks question about tallow has certainly stirred the pot abit,
i was in the nre office the other day and asked the question, 'not
shore' was the reply, a phone call to the government vet at ellinbank
had him/her contacting a reserch facility (someware) to find the exact
answer....and i was the second inquiry that day,,, why the interest?
came back the question..... so stay tuned someone will have an official
answer soon.
and just for interest Dept ag agnotes on the internet nre site say
tallow can be fed to bloated dairy cows.. other ag notes from around
australia give feeding rates for feedlot cattle and pigs and with an ME
of 39 its not bad for energy, the bad news is that 5% of the ration is
the maximum amount recomended otherwise problems will occer.. i had a
neighbour feeding it to calves a couple of years ago he reconed it was
great to "bind them up" as an aid to preventing scours...(i just wonder
how many he lost, as he had the stuff ad lib everyware).
I've been contemplating sowing fescue on a saline discharge area on the
farm but there seems to be just about as much information against as
for...
For..... these are "new" varietys more pallitable than the old
dermeter..
they are developing varietys with softer leaves to increase
pallitability further, feed tests show feed values compareable to
ryegrass...they have a deep root system suitable for extracting water
from well down the soil profile.
Against...dificult to establish, ie good soil tilth needed, seed must be
sown at exactly the right depth, must be let establish well before first
grazing and thereafter must be very well managed.
can anyone tell me when is the recomended time of year to establish it
as i assumed it would be autumn... but an ag note on dermeter fescue
said that spring time is the best time to sow and to sow in the autumn
is doomed to failure......Clare!!!!..theres one for your seed
day...........
