Hi all,
The dereg transitional package money will be funded by a loan arranged by
the Federal gov. and repaid by the introduction of a levy on drinking milk
that will be imposed post the processor.
The levy is not expected to increase the cost of milk to the consumer as
milk will be purchased by processors at a slightly lower price ( how much
lower will depend on our co - ops ability to retain as much of the existing
premium as possible ) There will be some other savings in the system as
well, such as the removal of the VDIA's role in price and supply
management.
The size of the required loan will also depend on whether or not
Government is prepared to contribute to the package in recognition of the
dairy industry's willingness to deregulate.
The time that the levy will need to remain in place to repay the loan will
depend on the size of the loan and the rate per litre of the levy. The
rate is still being debated at Australian Dairy Industry Council ( ADIC )
level.
