Actually, that could be the instability that the definition dictionary seems to cause. I remember that making such a macro is one of the things that causes problems.

And about that 'font', I expect you are talking about the tilde N (and other stuff) that shows up all over the place in the definitions. Those are supposed to be em-dashes, not pronunciation marks. They sometimes show up right (usually the first I look up a definition after start-up), but only rarely. That's another bug. Wonder what causes that.
