Here in Japan, dozens of DTP hardwares (with their own software) are developed and used in the publishing world. The most popular one is probably Shaken's system. Print-out is especially necessary to let them know characters' shape: my documents contain many uncommon characters of translitteration fonts. I can edit and print texts in vertical direction with Japanese version of ClarisWorks, which you would not call DTP program. So I'm dreaming of robbing a bank... Yusuke KINOSHITA
