Hi Philip.
thanks for making this clear to me. It obviously was
my lack of understanding of what is "going on" in a
header/footer which made me think that Nisus could
fix something there. Now as you mention it, it
becomes pretty obvious that there is just one page
number and therefore nothing to be converted.
But couldn't one create a work around for this?
For example:
* after having converted the page
number in a header/footer to text (say a "1")
* search for the number on the first page and replace
it with itself,
* search for the next "1" and replace it "1+1"
* and so on until the n-st page number is replaced by
"n + 1"?
I know one could, and you know I can't... :-)

still works great in NW 6 as far as I can tell. It also works fine with
page numbers, in particular it converts correctly page number cross
references (as in "see page number xxx" where xxx points to a cross
referenced item), and page numbers inserted in the running text.

lead to a sensible result, and that is with page numbers inserted in a
header/footer. Header/footer page numbers always get converted to their
display value ("1" in the default case, unless you set the starting number
to something else). But what else can you expect? While headers/footers
_display_ multiple times, they _exist_ in the document only once, so a page
number in a header/footer can only be converted to a single number. So
really, there is nothing for "Jerzy and the gang" to fix.

of the most common situations, so I recommend doing "Convert variables to
text" always on selections only, e.g. first do "Select All" (this excludes
the headers/footers). This will avoid having your running page numbers set
to 1.

document, you're going to need to insert a header/footer on every page
anyhow. This is a job reasonable people would only do with a macro, and in
that case you can have the macro insert a hard wired page number at the
same time.
